Avoid monitoring

Text

Phil 2:2-4

Aims

  1. to expose monitoring attitude from biblical context,

  2. to discuss reasons for nagging and complain during household duties and

  3. to study the biblical injunction for peaceful relationship in marital couple’s duties at home.

Introduction

There’s nothing worse than when a spouse complains about the way their partner has done something; it is not only rude, but it is discouraging. Allow your spouse to complete their share of the housework in their own way and space; because breathing down their neck while they work is only going to annoy them, especially if you’re dictating how things should be done. As the old saying goes, “If you want something done right, then do it yourself!” If you want the bed made a certain way or laundry on a certain setting, then assign it as one of your own tasks. Simply avoid monitoring your spouse, instead, take care of the things that matter most to you. Our Bible passage entreats us to relate with each other in the most humble manner even when attending to our duties at home.

Study guide

  1. How can you explain monitoring in the context of household responsibilities as expounded in the introduction and the Bible text? (Phil 2:3-4)

  2. What should be the attitude of couples when their spouse is on duty at home? Eph 4:31; 1Pet 2:1

  3. Why do some spouses nag or complain over their spouse’s duty at home? Prov 11:2a; 13:10a; 28:25a.

  4. What is the biblical injunction for couples’ peaceful co-existence in terms of attending to their household chores? Rom 12:10; Gal 5:26; Eph 5:21; Phil 2:3-4.

Conclusion

The moment a spouse starts comparing themselves, they start seeing their mistakes. Let couples learn to accommodate each other in the ways they go about their household chores. By this, they will leave together in harmony and enjoy their stewardship in peace.

Food for thought

Self-appraisal begets Pride which is the bedrock of monitoring attitude in marriage. Beware of self-praise.

Memory verse

Phil 2:3 “Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves”.
